Hi, can anyone tell me how to find the birth of an irish relative from Kildare. I have his death cert but unfortunately it doesnt give his date of birth. I have been told the name of his parents but have no way of confirming whether this is accurate. If I request the birth cert from gro ireland, will they be able to search for me without an exact date of birth? Any suggestions would be gratefully received. Regards, Lea |

Lea As long as you have an approximate year which you will be able to determine from the death cert then you should be o.k. The Northern Ireland GRO search for the year you specify and 2 years either side. Last time I used the Republic of Ireland GRO they searched the year in question and a year either side however I think it was relatively easy for them to do this for me as the name was not common - I'm not sure if it would be the same if the name was a typically Irish one. I'd give it a go anyway. Karen |

Clare In 1845 legislation came into force which provided for the registration of civil marriages in Ireland and for the regulation of all non Roman Catholic marriages. Further legislation, which became operative in 1864, provided for the inclusion of Roman Catholic marriages, together with birth and deaths. However like any new legislation there was not 100% compliance in the early years and the event make not have been registered. I recently requested 2 searches from the Northern Ireland gro. Each cost £11.00. I received a response within about 10 days indicating whether my search was successful and asking me to confirm whether I required the certificate which I confirmed by e-mail - a couple of days later the certificates actually arrived. I entered the information I had - individual's name, year of birth ((I enetered a random day and month as I did not know the actual date) and location of birth (Belfast - as I was unsure of the district), for all other fields I put in 'not known'. If the search is unsuccessful they let you know and retain £5.5 of the fee - the remainder can be refunded or used to perform another search. Certificates can be ordered from : http://www(.)groni(.)gov(.)uk I was very happy with the level of service I received. Karen |
