I had a quick look on the 1901 census for a Millie Holmes - none really jump out as the mum - one London girl is too young, though there is that girl born 1886 in London and boarding in Birmingham: she is a Music Hall Artiste aged 15 and living with a troop of performers - I suppose it you wanted a romantic story that would be it! And possibly a music hall artiste may go to entertain troops - dont know! I only looked at Millies - it may be she would be recorded as Millicent. I think you must try to find out who else was living at the address of the birth. Sorry, not a lot of help really Millie Holmes abt 1885 Hoylake, Cheshire, England Servant Hoylake Cum West Kirby Cheshire Millie Holmes Thomas, Jane abt 1887 Hartlepool, Durham, England Daughter West Hartlepool Durham Millie Holmes abt 1886 London, England Boarder Birmingham Warwickshire Millie Holmes Hannah M abt 1887 Halifax, Yorkshire, England Son Halifax Yorkshire Millie S Holmes Jane abt 1898 London, England Daughter Penge Surrey

Unfortunately as her father is not named on the certificate, it would seem that she was illegitimate and you possibly will never find out who her father was. Sam x

As you can see, she has mums name which means mum was unmarried. If you say her mother died at war (which is unusual, not many women went to war in 1914 unless - was she a nurse?) then you could try the CWGC site for war casualties. You may find that the war story isnt completely true and that Millie may well have married but not taken her child with her? Have you found a death for Millie in normal bmd? Official adoption didnt come about until late 1927 so unfortunately there wont be any adoption papers - kids were usually passed to a family member or friend for fostering. You could possibly try the electoral roll to see who was also living at the address where she was born? Girls, would often go home to their mother to have a baby, particularly the first - which I assume she was? Good luck
