Can anyone tell me who to contact if I want to track down a birth certificate for a relative who was born to Scottish parents who were living in Singapore in 1885-90. The father was not in the services but was an engineer working either in the docks or buildiing roads in the jungle. Have tried Scottish Records Office in Edinburgh but without much success.Thanks.Diana

The child may be on the GRO overseas list, which I believe can be searched online. Hopefully someone can advise? Gwyn

Hi Gwyn I have tried looking on the findmypast website but they seem to be mainly for service personnel . There must be a place somewhere. Somebody suggested the High Commission in London. Thanks anyway.Diana

My son was born in Singapore although we were in the services. He has two birth certificate's one registered with Singapore, we also had to register him with the British High Commision in Singapore all the records for British registered in Singapore come under Canterbury, so you could try the Canterbury records office.Hope this helps

Hi Diana, Have you tried www.familyrelatives.org ? It is free to register, and they have the GRO overseas birth records for 1985-90 to search free.

Hi Margaret Thank you for the information about Canterbury records office. I shall definitely try them. I phoned the Scottish GRO in Edinburgh yesterday and they searched the overseas records for me but without much luck. They said to contact GRO in London for the consular returns which I did who said I need to order the certificate. It might not even have been registered as not all births were.Thank you for the info anyway.Diana
