Hi No had not found them. But if these are the correct ones who is the Father of him. Can you see him on the 1901 census. I can't find him here either. However I can find a Thomas Bowyer of the same age born in the same place. So looked for his birth but can't find him either. Joy |

Hi They both had daughters of the same age. If you look on the 1871 census Martha was with Fanny. I have the birth certificate of Alice Bowyer so she belongs to Joseph and Mary. It gets very confusing. Joy |

Hi Georgina Just got back from work. Here are the details you have requested. The only death I can find of Fanny's husband is John Brough in the year 1867 a-m-j qtr. aged 28. This then makes Martha's father in question. They were married in 1858 o-n-d qtr. I know for a fact she was living with her mother in 1871 on the census Elizabeth Burgess Head W 69 Laundress Fanny Brough Daughter W 21 John Burgess Son Married 19 Potters Labourer Eliza Burgess Dau Married 21 Warehouse woman Mary a Brough Grandaughter 5 Emma Brough Grandaughter 2 Martha Brough Grandaughter 3 months Now for Mary Bowyer she was on the 1891 census details are 12 Roberts Row, Hanley Mary Bowyer Head Married 49 Born in Stone William Edwards Boarder M 49 Cabdriver born in Tunstall. Georgina You are with the right family. I have Henry Bowyers birth certificate as well as his father's. I also have the marriage certificate of Joseph to Mary Calkin. I know that Joseph is Henry's brother as I have traced this family forward. Mary their mother is living with Joseph in Bury in 1901 and I have found her in 1891 but can't find her on the 1881. I looked for birth records of all the other named children. I could not find Alice Brough so looked for Alice Bowyer. I then found her so purchased the Birth cert to be certain that I had the correct person. She too has the parents of Joseph Bowyer and Mary (nee Calkin) I have traced Fanny's line but found that her husband had died and that on the 1871 census she was living with her mother as a widow. If this fact is true how can Thomas been born as a Brough. So who is his true father. I cannot find any record of abrith for him. Joy |

Copied this here so it's easier to read. Hope you don't mind Can anyone out there help me I am stuck and don't know how else to find the answer. My Gt Gt Grandfather Joseph Bowyer born 1844 married Mary Calkin and had children. Including my Gt Grandfather Henry in 1869. On the 1881 census it appears that Mary has left him and he is now bringing up his children with another lady and her children. However the names of the children are incorrect along with her name. I have managed to trace all but one of the family but am now stuck on who the other child is. This is what I have Joseph Bowyer aged 38 Fanny Bowyer aged 43 wife. (This should read Fanny Brough Widowed) Mary Ann Brough 16 Step Daughter ( I believe this to be correct as I have found her birth) Joseph Bowyer Brough 13 Step Son (This is incorrect it should read Bowyer and Son) Henry Bowyer Brough 11 Step Son (This is incorrect it should read Bowyer and Son) Martha Brough 10 Step Daughter I I believe this also to be correct) Alice Brough 10 Step Daughter (This is incorrect have now purchased Birth cert to prove it should read Bowyer Daughter) Thomas Brough 4 Step Son. Thomas is the one I cannot trace. Fanny's husband died at least 6 years prior to his birth. I am unable to find any trace of his birth, so I have now tried to find his birth under Bowyer but again not been able. Can anyone help me solve this riddle. Also for the past 4 years have tried to find Mary Bowyer on the 1881 census. I think again that she may be under the wrong surname like Fanny but how to find her is proving impossible. Thank you |
