With such a common name I think you are going to have to work out the most likely and do as Keith suggests, give fathers full name and mums first name as checking points.

Hi Paul, have had a look on FreeBMD, only one born W.Derby 1848 Q3 which would put him as age 2 on the 51 census. Lots born 1850 though, and some born Liverpool. Name: Henry Williams Year of Registration: 1848 Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec District: West Derby County: Lancashire Volume: 20 Page: 958 Name: Henry Williams Year of Registration: 1849 Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar District: Liverpool (1837-1924) County: Lancashire Volume: 20 Page: 252 Two others born Q2 1849 in Liverpool that may be possible, but unlikely. If you wish to order any cert, you could stipulate a checking point of parents names to be sure.

can anyone help ,I seem to be getting worse at this.What I need is the details of my grt grandfathers birth so I can order a birth cert.His name is Henry Williams ,born in West Derby -Liverpool abt 1849 married to Jessie Williams nee Wallace.Parents were Henry Williams and Eliza nee Burrows (I think ).Sorry to be a pain but I just don't seem to have my Head screwed on right at the moment Paul
