On 1871 census my 3xg grandmother Susan Dixon nee Smith has her nephew Jesse Phillips living with her. 1871 Gifford street Finsbury, Islington Susan Dixon B.1815/6 Whetstone, Middlesex, England Thomas Dixon B.1816/7 Whetstone, Middlesex, England carpenter Alfred Dixon 1853/5 Henry Dixon 1856/7 Jane Hinson 1859/60 grandaughter Jesse Philips 1851/2 nephew on 1861 census Jesse is living with his grandparents the Smiths Station Road Friern Barnet John Smith 1807/8 friern barnet Susan Smith 1804/5 friern barnet Jesse Phillips 1851/2 Grandson Friern Barnet Ann Phillips 1855 Granddau St George in East George Phillips 1857 Granddau St George in East Now I thought it would be safe to assume John and Susan, as Susan Dixon/Smith parents. But of course she was born 1815/6 and therefore her father would be 7 and her mother 11 if that was true! I traced them on the earlier censi and the ages are pretty constant 1851 census friern barnett john smith 1807 friern barnet Susannah smith 1805 george 1833 1841 census Friern Barnett John Smith abt 1811 Middlesex, England Fryern Barnet Middlesex Susannah Smith abt 1806 Middlesex, England Fryern Barnet Middlesex George Smith abt 1833 Middlesex, England Fryern Barnet Middlesex Emma Smith abt 1830 Middlesex, England Fryern Barnet Middlesex The IGI Backs this up. Only two children christened for John and Susan/Susannah. EMMA MARIA SMITH b 12 FEB 1830 c21 MAR 1830 GEORGE JOHN SMITH b17 OCT 1832 c18 NOV 1832 Emma is Jesses mother, married a Thomas Phillips 15 Jan 1851 Stepney Now basically I'm thinking I've been led astray by the census here. Jesse cannot possibly be Susan Dixons nephew and Emma her sister, though they are obviously related in some way. There's not alot of Smiths in Friern Barnet, and only one Susan at any time, christened at exactly the right time to be mine 1815. b.07 JUL 1815 c.23 JUL 1815 Father: Joseph Smith Mother: Mary So I'm heavily inclined to think that IS her parents details despite what the census suggests. Just looking for opinions on that, in case I've missed something blatantly obvious! |

Maybe your Susan, and John Smith are brother and sister, therefore making Jesse Phillips, susan's gt-nephew ? Alison |

Alison, yes that could well be it. Unfortunately the IGI records for Friern Barnett only start 1813. I know a sister was born 1811 as her death is recorded 1814, with birth date given. I had previously from that assumed this to be the marraige of Susans parents Joseph Smith and Maria Rutherford London 1810. Only one I could find matching on Pallots. However I'm thinking now this could well be wrong, and there were siblings pre 1811. |

I have a man listed as a nephew when he's really a cousin. |

Thanks Jim, yes that is more or less what I have, with Eliza dying 1814. This is a branch I researched along time ago when I was starting out, and I'm going back to now. Originally I had assumed that meant that was all the children the couple had, but now realise the transcribed Friern Barnett baptisms on IGI only start at 1813, so quite possible there were births before them. I'm thinking Alison is on the right lines. John 1807 their older brother. That would make Jesse Susan Dixons great nephew, so they probably just said nephew to census man. |
