Royal Navy or Merchant Marine ship census for 1891

For James Cleaver, born Jan 4th, 1872 in Birmingham, who shows up on Ancestry.co, March 31st, 1891, Boston Mass.-to Canada, as a settler. He was on the 'Norwegian' which sailed from Scotland, to Liverpool, then to Halifax, then Boston. Can you help me find him in the 1891 English census? He probably would be in Leicester, or Nottingham as a base place. His father was James Cleaver, 1845 and Mother Eliza Fitchett 1846, both born in Leicester. He doesn't show in his father's census info (father remarried to Sarah Ann Smith 1876 and had 4 more children, 1876, 1882, 1885 and 1887) James ran away from home at 13 yrs old. I am trying to see where he was between 1885 and 1891, when he arrived in Canada. (the family story is that he hid on a ship, was found and worked his passage as a cabin boy, then jumped ship in Halifax, but the Ancestry.com ship list disproves that story! I do have a picture of him in a sailor uniform, and don't know if it is English or Canadian, as he worked on a barge on Lake Manitoba 1904-1910. Thank you Carol

The 1891 census was taken on 5th April so if he was on a ship that left in March, he won't appear on it. Or am I reading your question wrongly? Sam x

Hi Carol, The 1891 Census for England was taken on the night of 5 April 1891. SO if you have found him on a passenger list on Ancestry on 31st March, he will not appear on the 1891 english census!

Thank you, Yes, I have him on 1881 with his family in Nottingham! I never know when the census is done for the different year. Thank You for your help, Possibly he was in transit and never got on the Canadian census then. Again thanks to all! Carol

How do you search on ancestry for passenger/crew lists?. I am researching family who were crew on ships from Liverpool between 1860 s and 1930 s would love to trace them, at the moment can only get some that were ashore during census dates. I have a subscription to ancestry.co.uk. Thanks Jacky

You get census info for ship crew on the census just like an ordinary search, if they are included - Im still trying to work it out but I was told if they were in dock or British seas they were included but Ive only ever found ONE fishing boat which was offshore at the time and they had completed the form. Apart from that, none of my merchant seamen have ever shown up.
