Charles and martha manwaring from Salford had 7 children; sarah 1855, rebecca 1860. alice 1862, john 1864, william 1866, frances 1868, charles 1871. All there on the 1871 census. BUT 10 years on new wife Elizabeth, new children. I'm sure its the same Charles, d of b, occupation etc fit but am puzzled as to what happened to Martha and the children. Can't find any trace, looked on deaths too. Please help! Sue

Here's a possible marriage for daughter Rebecca: Name: Rebecca Manwaring Year of Registration: 1880 Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec District: Chorlton County: Lancashire Volume: 8c Page: 1016 and one for Frances: Name: Frances Manwaring Year of Registration: 1886 Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar District: Salford County: Greater Manchester, Lancashire Volume: 8d Page: 149 So Frances must be somewhere on the 1881 Census!

As Lynne has said - Martha is there on the 1881 Census with her children under surname Mainwaring - she is listed on the census as Widow and a housekeeper.

Many thanks Sue, Athena and Ann, I think thats her just spelt with an extra i.Now I've got another puzzle! Says she's a widow, but he appears on later census's with new wife and family! Would a lady put down widow if her husband had gone off with someone else do you think, or is that illegal?

Yes, that is quite possible - she may not have wanted her neighbours etc to know. Lots of people gave false information on the census records, unfortunately. On the other hand, are you 100% certain that the Charles you found is the same chap?

Actually, he probably had gone off with someone else since I can't see any possible death entries for a Charles Manwaring between 1871 and 1881. The only death of a Charles Manwaring I can see relates to an infant - probably their son since it is listed as being born 1871 and died 1871.

Athena,I am sure its him as his sister elizabeth Barlow is living with him in 1871 and 1881, with his old wife and newer model! he had at least 16 children, sounds like an old rogue - he's a very very distant rellie!! Many thanks for all your help, I hope I can return the favour one day. Sue

Hello again - well, I was just about to say that it's definitely him as I checked both the 81 and 71 census records and I think that he went off with the servant girl, Elizabeth, who is aged 18 and living with them in 1871!! Yes, his elder sister was living with him in 71 and still with him in 81 with his new partner. Oh well...one of those cases of the hubby going off with a younger woman, eh? Glad to have helped a bit - Athena

Tee hee - just as an after thought - did you notice that in 1881 he has ANOTHER servant girl living with them (also named Elizabeth), listed below his sister? I wonder if he had any children with that one? Athena
