Comparing the writing to the other letters, I would say that the first bit is 'do' for ditto and the second bit is a J. Not that it helps because I can't read the occupation of the person above, but could the J be for Journeyman? Does his occupation in 1851 give any clues? Sam x |

Very hard to read. The first letter is E when you compare it to other E's. Seems to start Eng and end er. Have magnified it to the max and that all i can make out. I think its Engraver Shirley |

I'm not absolutely certain that this is my man! In 1851 and on child's birth cert in 1849 his profession is 'Watch Finisher' On this page of the 1841 census there is a Thomas Moore who is a 'Watch Finisher' ,just a couple of lines above but I'm not sure if it's part of the same household. A ditto would be great! Sue Just seen your answer Athena - I'm glad you agree! Just need to work out the relationships now ... |

Ah, well there's your answer then, I think. It must say Watchfinisher, as I suspected - and in which case that's your confirmation you're on the right track and he's your chap! I would suspect that you have two related households on that page - William aged 55 and Thomas 60 are probably brothers. Your William aged 25 could be the son of either of those two men really. Have you not found anything relating to his birth yet? |

The occupation above it, for Thomas Moore aged 60, looks like 'Watchfinisher' to me, whatever that might be. So, your William Moore could be dittoed that, plus as someone else said 'J' for journeyman perhaps. The 'engraver' occupation mentioned by Shirley is actually for a different person, another William (Moore?), aged 55 (the father perhaps?). |

I wish, Athena - have you seenhow many William Moores there are in East London at that time! One slight problem with this result is that in 1851 William is married to Sarah with five children, but only one of them could possibly be one of the children mentioned in 1841 and even that's debatable as he said to be 8 in 1841 and 10 in 1851! Here it is (name mistranscribed as MOOG) William Moog Age: 28 Estimated birth year: abt 1823 Relation: Head Spouse's name: Sarah Gender: Male Where born: Shoreditch, Middlesex, England Civil parish: Bethnal Green Ecclesiastical parish: St Philip County/Island: Middlesex Country: England Street address: Occupation: Condition as to marriage: Disability: View image Registration district: Bethnal Green Sub-registration district: Hackney Road ED, institution, or vessel: 3 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 16 Household Members: Name Age Edmond Moog 3 Elizabeth Moog 5 Henry Moog 1 Mary A Moog 9 Sarah Moog 30 William Moog 28 William Moog 10 It's possible that 1st wife died of course and I know that infant mortality was high but that number of children?... Still not convinced Sue |
