Really strange that the IGI has a submitted record for a marriage in 1854 between the two names mentioned. Keep coming back to this entry in 1871 only because of the other name in the household. Also he is born in the same area as the marriage in 1854 Name: John Cameron Age: 37 Estimated birth year: abt 1834 Relationship: Head Gender: Male Where born: Kilmallie, Argyll Registration Number: 520 Registration district: Kilmallie Civil parish: Kilmallie County: Argyll Address: No 33 Banavie Occupation: Hotel Waster (unemployed) ED: 13 Page: 8 (click to see others on page) Household schedule number: 46 Line: 1 Roll: CSSCT1871_91 Household Members: Name Age John Cameron 37 John Cameron 3 - nephew Anne MacDonald 20 Will have to rule this 1871 posting out. Have you ruled out the Ernest Cameron 1860 with parents John and Margaret on the 1871 census. Maureen |

I don't know if it helps but I had a quick look on Scotland's people for a marriage of a John Cameron and Margaret Mcdonald, there are 2 in 1870 one in Partick and one in Kiltarlity. I could find no births of any Ernest Cameron and 2 Arthur Cameron born between 1870 and 1872, on ein Arbroath and one in Govan Jennifer |

Thank you both. Yes, I've checked both those records and there are families with the correct parent's names but no Ernests or Arthurs and then we have a couple of Ernests with the wrong parent's names!!! Again, thank you, I appreciate you taking the time to respond. Caitlin |

I take it you have discounted the two Ernest Camerons, one at Inverness and one at Ladhope, in the 1891 census? Denis |

Have you searched the 1881 Scottish census for the family? This would be one way to confirm his name etc.and if parents were in Argyll. Betty |

I've taken over a 30 year search started by my late mother trying to find her paternal grandfather's family. My g grandfather, known as ERNEST or ARTHUR Cameron, born c1872. He seems to have changed his name and his birth name is unknown. His death certificate in 1944 names his parents as John Cameron and Margaret McDonald, also from Argyl. However I can't find a match there with a son called Ernest or Arthur. I have found one Ernest Cameron on the 1901 census and he's in Peterhead Prison. Previous census records don't show anything. Any suggestions or tips on finding out more about this Ernest? |
