First cousins marriage.

This is one of the biggest Urban Myths of all time! First cousins have always been allowed to marry. However, pre Reformation, they had to get a dispensation from Rome to do so - accompanied by a large purse. It is possibly this which gave rise to the myth - poor people couldnt afford the dispensation and the information just got passed down that 'first cousins can't get married'. OC |

Yes I,ve had several first cousins marry. Plus the maternal grt gran married not only her 1st cousin after her 1 st hubby died But then HIs elder brother after he died. AND the 3rd hubby had previously been married to her younger sister. Wot a round Robin .its a wonder we aint all doolally!!! Shirley |

I have found my g grandfathers 1st marriage to his first cousin (his mums brothers daughter) I didn't think they would be allowed to marry. This was in 1915 was this possible? Jackie |
