Helen Barnardo kids were not only sent to Canada and the US, they were also sent to Oz and South Africa! poor little souls! I am an ex Barnardo's kid from the 50s and I hated it! Thank God I stayed in England... Gerri x ps... A good book to read is by Margaret Humphreys 'Empty Cradles' It tells of thier plight and how Margaret tries to help them years later...'Home Kids' had it rough!

Hi For information on the children who came to Australia, you could start at the NAA website (http://www.naa.gov.au/fsheets/fs124.html) lists the series involved. Gives the NAA series connected. If you go into RECORDSEARCH and sign in as a guest, and put the child's name and the series number, you may get some results. There has been a lot of interest around about these boys recently. Diane

Recording of their original family details appear to have been worse than poor. I have been believing their dates for years, which of course halted any progress. They were out by 5 years, but to be fair things were so different back then...... Should have realised when I re-read the careworkers notes and the same child had four different forenames not to mention variations on surname! *** The key to unpicking this mayhem was a burial date for his Grandmother, followed by finding her plot location and luckily her husbands name, the marriage which of course revealed maiden names in the birth entries. After that we could trace backwards to Cork, a tree that truly belongs to my Dad! Still no trace of his mother but thats another tale! Having a tangible family, names and dates means an incredible lot to a 'Home Boy' and as a quirk of fate our small family tradition of naming the boys beginning with A - didn't start with us! Its taken us years, up lots of wrong paths, Thanks to all who have helped me, particularly the Putney Vale Cemetary Staff, Kind Regards Julie
