Hi Claire This site has information and photographs on the Workhouse in Dean Street, Hexham and, as mentioned by Babs, the Northumberland Collection Service at Woodhorn holds records, which might be worth asking about as it is possible there could be some information on Jean/Jeannie HOLMAN that would help to identify her: http://www.workhouses.org.uk/index.html?Hexham/Hexham.shtml The email address for the Northumberland Collection Service at Woodhorn is: collections at woodhorn.org.uk (replace 'at' with the other symbol!) Hope it helps. All the best and God bless you, Lynne |

Hello all, I am trying to do sime research for a friend about her grandfather. He was born in Hexham in 1924 to an unmarried mother, no father is given on the birth certificate. Shortly after he was given up to a childrens home and went into the army at 14 years old, or so the family rumours go. We have his mothers name but I have no idea when she was born - The birth took place at Dean Street House in Hexham, I think this maybe the workhouse but I'm not sure.. Does anyone know how to proceed with finding any ancestors? Apparently the mother was working at a large house in the area as a servant at the time, and may have got into trouble by a member of this family Any help appreciated Claire |
