On the 1841 census I have living in Stanhope Street, Toxteth: William Corlett, aged 58, Pawnbroker - born outside the county with Ann also 58 but born in Lancashire George aged 26, Watch Maker, Lancashire born James, 20, apprentice Watch Maker born in the county of Lancashire I've traced James's descendents through to 1901 and beyond the problem of WIlliam is confusing me I've looked in the directories and found him listed as a pawnbroker (and possibly a Captain) from 1816-about 1841 in 8 Stanhope Street (and maybe in 1807 in Upper Harrington Street, which is around the corner) Then 1841-1845: he's moved to 33 Stanhope Street From there I lose the pawnbroker... but in 1847 there's a William Corlett living in nearby Chester St, however he's listed a gentleman And in 1848 & 1849: this gentleman is listed living in Great Homer Street Looked on 1851 no sign of Pawnbroker or Gentleman in the Liverpool/Toxteth/West Derby area The only WIlliam who fits the correct age is a William Corlett aged 68, born Isle of Man (occupation: properitor of houses) living in Hindley, near Wigan....married to a Ann aged 68, born St Helen's, Lancashire and a son (William) who was born in Liverpool in 1808 So how can I prove the link between these two and prove they are one and the same? |

Have you considered the obvious and checked for a death? There are at least 4 registered liverpool/west derby between 1841 and 1851. If you follow the Willaim Corlett b1808 in 1851 that is the Catholic priest forward, in 1871 he is from the Isle of Man, though on 51 and 61 he says Liverpool. |

My immediate response would be WILLS! There is no reason this 'gentleman' couldnt be the pawnbroker grown rich in his profession and retired. Check out wills for him. Gentleman really only means someone who is living on private means/i.e. not working cos he has the dosh not to. Not your bloke, but this one comes up on National Archives online, may be worth keeping details in case its another generation: Will of William Corlett otherwise Curlipp, Mariner now on board His Majesty's Ship Frederick lying within the Port of Liverpool of Liverpool, Lancashire Date 13 June 1758 Catalogue reference PROB 11/838 Dept Records of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury Series Prerogative Court of Canterbury and related Probate Jurisdictions: Will Registers Piece Name of Register: Hutton Quire Numbers: 149 - 196 Image contains 1 will of many for the catalogue reference |
