Boundary Changes.

Does anyone know how many Boundary Changes there have been in the last couple of hundred years? Is there an 'online' source? Bearing in mind that some Counties have ceased to exist. So many Census Returns only give the County as place of birth. Supposing a relative was born in Bournemouth, it's now in Hampshire, it used to be in Dorset - which FHS should I contact? It's difficult enough for me and I was born in Britain, it must be a nightmare for those born abroad! Thanks, M. Steer

The Boundary Commission website should tell you... http://www.statistics.gov.uk/pbc/

Is it in Hampshire again? I thought it was in Dorset having changed from Hampshire...Lol. I think Winchester R.O.still hold Bournemouth PRs (don't quote me !) so I think there will be some overlap. If you type in Registration Districts on Google, the Genuki site has alot of information about where and when districts changed and where records can be found. Gwyn

Bournemouth was in Hampshire until 1974 since when it has remained in Dorset. Some records are to be found Hampshire RO in Winchester, others are at the Dorset Family History Centre in Dorchester. Ancestry seem to place all references to Bournemouth in Hampshire regardles of wht time period they refer to. Jennifer

Thankyou all for your replies. I've had a look on the Boundary Commission site, I'm afraid it wasn't very helpful - it was set up in 1944. My apologies, if I misled you, I only used Bournemouth as an example, I have no connection with Bournemouth. It's just one of the places that seem to keep moving. A bit like Berwick (Scotland or England?) Rutland dissappeared but then came back again. Thanks again, M. Steer
