re census forms; what does do mean

As said, it means Ditto - the same as above. Sometimes you get just the head of the family - say Jim Smith and then Do under the Smith for the rest of the family. You can get it for occupations or places of birth too.

Do means Ditto. Often used to indicate same surname.
