I have an ancestor William Merrie who is listed as having the occupation of Drill Instructor. I am not sure that this is specifically an army post. I seem to remember from the foggy recesses of my mind that the Irish in times past had Drill Instructors in schools. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Drill Instructor is not specifically but usually an army post. They were regular soldiers attached to the Militia to give them military training, as were rifle instructors. Drill instructors could be attached to schools which had an Officer Training Corps. Regards Keith
