If you do a google search for Cornwall vessels, Purfleet - it will bring up articles about the 'Floating Borstal' - yes your ancestor was in trouble - have a google, you will even get a photograph of the ship he was on. |

Are you viewing the census on Ancestry? If so follow the link line and click on the word VESSELS, then scroll down to find Cornwall and then select view descriptions. Cornwall is listed as 'Reformatory school ship for junvenile offenders' Pete |

In 1871 census, my gggdad was on Cornwall vessels mooring in Purfleet, Essex. Under Rank or Occupation, it said Boy under dentention. What does it mean? Is it a prison ship? Valerie |
