The ''Disabilty'' section of the census was one of the most difficult to interpret as there was little consistency as to how it was completed. Blind or Dumb was probably the easiest to interpret but Idiot. Lunatic, Imbecile and Feeble Minded were much more difficult. Here are some interpretations:- Idiot - unable to protect themselves from common dangers. Tended to be applied to people who were born with mental disorders. Lunatic - person with a mental disorder who could from time to time appear lucid. Imbecile ~ could protect themselves from common dangers, but unable to take care of themselves. Was frequently used to describe elderly people suffering from dementure. Feeble-Minded ~ required care to protect themselves.

These were the official medical terms at the time. We now know what causes them, they looked at behaviour. Ozi.
