My ancestors are being typically awkward and are not on the IGI. Local archives don’t have the parish registers for the churches I ‘think’ my ancestors used. Two of the parishes are 'in the care of the incumbent' and one is at the LMA. Has anyone approached the incumbent, what is the procedure, can anyone tell me their experiences please. Thanks, Selena |

Selena if 'in care of the Incumbent' means the church hold's the records then try contacting them, I had a relative who died in 1940 and I contacted the church where she was buried and they fetched the record books down for me to look at and were really helpful. georgina. |

Georgina, that sounds promising. I have a handful of baptisms and a marriage completely missing from 1830's and one from 1868 (been looking for 4 years). Selena |

Incumbents [ the vicars of the churches] vary in their willingness to help! Find their names and contact details and just hope they are of the co-operative sort! I have come across both---one who claimed the records were not in a fit state!!! and refused access, but also several local ones who have been very keen to help and very interested. Fingers crossed! |

Also be aware that one or two churches hold their own records and charge for access to them, one in Kettering (All Saints?)charges I think about £15 an hour to view the records. |

Thanks for the comments, sorry I didn't get back sooner. Up until now I've been to the local history library and have been able to look ont the fishe and get a photocopy for 30p. I don't know for 'certain' that my ancestors are at these churches, just lived in that area. Also fifteen quid could be nothing or two certs Thanks again, Selena |

Don't know if its rather late to repy to this but my husband is an 'incumbant' and does get enquiries about this. Esp baptism records. In this area all such records go, periodically, to the Diocesan Archive. Most churches don't hold records beyond a certain date. So application should be made to the Diocesan Archive. Are you sure the churches your ancestors may have been connected with are still open. Also the parish boundaries could have changed. the other thing is that those boudaries are not always obvious and the Parish Church is not always the one you live nearest to. One last thing, are you sure about their denomination? Regards Sue |
