You need to consult parish registers which are to be found at Country Record Offices. Which counties are you researching? There are some online records to be found - mainly at Family Search (using the IGI) but these don't cover every parish. http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true If you tell us which counties and places you are interested in, we may be able to do a bit of Googling and find you some online sources. Cheers, Horatia

Tara, You won't be able to get a copy of his birth cert because birth certs prior to July 1837 don't really exist. All you may find is his baptism but you will need to know the name of the parish and not just the county - have you looked on Family Search? (Website I posted?) Cheers, Horatia

Quite a lot of the local Family History Societies sell CDs or books with baptisms/marriages/burials. They are not always complete but they can be helpful. The Nottingham one is very good as is the Isle of Axholme (Lincs). I have both. For Yorkshire, you can get burials for a number of Deaneries (I have Doncaster & Snaith?Hatfield).

Tara Relatively expoensive ... usually around 16-20 pounds each. But I am working in the the USA at the moment so its hard for me to get to the Records Offices. That makes it a cost effective alternative. Also, I know roughly where most of my family are from so I can target the CDs and refer to them on multiple occassions as I peel back the generations.

Tara, Don't go to the Family Records Centre in London for parish registers. All they hold are census records and the indexes to Births, Deaths and Marriages (which you can see online for Free) with Ancestry. For baptisms, marriages and burials (pre 1837) you need to go to a county record office. In your case Hertfordshire County Record Office for these Birchmores. However, you will be able to see marriages on film or microfiche from the 1500s - 1900's. Cheers, Horatia

Have you found the kids birth certs? You can order one and find out the parents names and occupation and where they were at the time of the birth. If you can find the marriage then (you will have mums maiden name) you can order that and get the names of both fathers and their occupations and then go back a further generation.

The baptism that Horatia found for you is on the IGI - family search site. This means that the parish register for that church has been filmed by the LDS and you can order it to view at your nearest LDS centre for, I think, £2.70. To find your nearest LDS family history centre, look on their site, on the home page I think. OC

There is also a Daniel Birchmore christened Flamstead Herts in 1814 on IGI. Be aware that Kenworth is now in Bedfordshire.(Don't know if it has always been so)
