Hi, How would I go about looking for an Inquest of a Death in 1904 ? This would be in Lancashire, I have the death certificate. Thanks, Ellen.

You might find some information in one of the local newspapers at that time. You would need to contact one of the local family history libraries (try Googling Lancashire Libraries if you're not sure where they are) to find out if they hold fiche records of the local papers for that year but whether they do a look-up service is another thing. I usually go to my local family history library and do the searching on the fiche machines myself. I've found quite a few coroner reports for various ancestral inquests by searching newspapers this way. The length of article and amount of info all depends on the nature of the death. Ellen Few inquest reports survive but you may be lucky! I would first try the local records office not only for the inquest report but also for a local newspaper that may have reported it. A local library may have old newspapers on film. Chris

hi ellen, i found a newspaper report about the death of a rellie in 1905. I used the date on the death cert and then used the British library to do a search of local newspapers circulating at that time. Went to Colindale Archive (in london) sorry i didn't note where you are. Anyway was lucky and found that a reporter had been to the inquest and reported on it. Hope that helps good luck yvette

Many Thanks to all who have got back to me. This is a relative of mine who died from drowning at the age of 2yrs, on the Certificate it says drowning by accident and there was an inquest, it happened in Lathom, Lancashire, I live in Dorset so it will be difficult to get up there to do immediate researching. I shall contact the Library local to that Village. Regards Ellen.

Ellen - I contacted the Mitcham library and a very kind lady sent me a photo copy of the report from the local newspaper in 1922 - posted it to Spain and did not cost me a penny. In actual fact first one did not arrive and she re did it and posted for a second time So it is well worth trying contacting the local library. Love Mary xx.
