Hi I think there is a book called the Bastard Book which used to be held by the local Parish Church. THis book would show who the father of the child was and the minister/priest would then ask the father for money on the mother's behalf. I'm not sure if that is an English thing only but they might have it in Scotland too. I've not tried to find out yet.
