hi all , i am looking for a birth for Beatrice Mildren c1865 in st austell cornwall and cannot find her anywhere,I have her wedding cert from 1885 and it says age 20,i also have record of death in 1919 age 53 which again takes me back to 1865ish,i have trawled ancestry the long way thru the records a few years either side of 1865 and nothing at all. Did they have to produce a birth cert to get married ,cos if so the dates have to be right dont they?? anyone who has an idea let me know ,thanks Barry

Looks like she was born before the wedding so that's why you can't find her birth. Marriages Sep 1866 Mildren John G Helston 5c 313 Mitchell Johanna Helston 5c 313 OLIVEY William Helston 5c 313 PENGELLY Grace Helston 5c 313 Rose

Well done Ann. I don't see them in 1891 but they're listed as Daniels in 1901 even though all the births are Mildrens on FreeBMD. Rose

Nobody seems to have mentioned that birth registration was not compulsory until 1876

As she said she was 20 on her marriage cert, then she would have needed her father's permission to marry and so I would think the age is correct. OC

From the number of incorrectly named fathers, you would have to think not. Illegitimate children often made up a fathers name for the marriage certificate. My g-g-grandmother and g-g-grandfather told the minister they were 20 and 22 in 1859, when she was 18 and he 20 (but they were 8 and half months pregnant - baby born week after wedding). Then they also told the 1861 census enumerator they were 20 and 22, having aged not at all in nearly two years. Di

Barry, I think you might want to order one of the other children's birth certs to get Grace's maiden name. That might help when tracking down Beatrice because I don't see any births for a Beatrice Pengelly. Registration wasn't compulsory but all the other kids are registered.
