has anyone else found this? my ancesters are doing my head in . not only were my two great grandfathers illigitamit ( luckily one was brought up by his grandparents so i have managed to trace the family back to 1798) but his surname of PROUDLOCK has shown up on the census as TROUDLOCK , BROUDLOCK and PRONDLOCK. then just to confuse me a bit more his grandfather is at home with parents and siblings on 1851 census but also at the home of a friend where his aunt is a servant. |

I have a relative who as a boy was listed as Freddy with his grandparents and Frederick at home with his parents on the same census. They only lived a couple of doors apart so he probably had time to run home before the ennumerator got there. They don't make it easy for us do they. |

I have one guy showing up at home on a census and the same year is at hospital on the census. no idea where he really was. Have heard of soldiers being in the barracks as single and with a 'wife' as married on the same census. |

I have two instances: A daughter showing up with her parents in Sydenham and her uncle in West Ham, and a sailor on his ship in the Humber and at home with his wife in Hull. |

I've got one girl listed with both her grandmother and her parents..........mother worked, so presumably granny had her during the day, and she would have been at 'home' in the evening and overnight. Reg |

I've got an entire family appearing twice on the 1841 census! HO107/325-1/17/29: Gt Baddow, Essex: Charles Tabor abt 1786, tanner Jane Tabor abt 1786 Sarah Tabor abt 1811 John Tabor abt 1826, tanner Alfred Tabor abt 1828 Henry Tabor abt 1826, brickmaker ... and again here: HO107/325-1/9/13: Gt Baddow, Essex: Charles Tabor abt 1786, tanner Jane Tabor abt 1783, washerwoman Sarah Tabor abt 1811 John Tabor abt 1826, tanner's lab Henry Tabor abt 1826, brickmaker Alfred Tabor abt 1828 I can only assume that this was a stuff-up by the enumerator - either he called on the family twice (and was supplied with the info twice), or else he simply copied their details onto the enumeration forms twice. Either way, not very observant of him! Richard |

My wifes' 2xGt Grandfather appears twice in the same day. He is on his ship, listed with the rest of the crew in the Yarmouth Northern district and also appears at home with his wife and son in the Yarmouth Southern district. I asssume he was onboard during the day or they entered port that day and were registered as a ships company and then went home to be subsequently counted again. Barry |

I know what you mean about names not being spelt correctly! I was so close to giving up as I couldnt find my partners grandfathers marriage... as it turns out he was entered as Claudsdale rather than Cloudsdale! And this was a 1950 record! The worst thing is that, as he has no contact with his family, we cant figure out if he has an Aunty named Jayne (sister of his dad) and the mothers maiden name has been entered as Robinson rather than Robertson! Then just another blow..... the current electrol roll listing whom we believe to be my partners dad (no contact has been made in over 20 years), that property has been under water for the past 2 years! Its never straight forward, but I am not giving up! |

My ggg grandmother appears on the 1861 census twice. Once at home with her family and again at a friend's house, further along the street. On the subject of GRO mis-transcriptions, my own marriage certificate has two transcription errors on the GRO Index in that both of our surnames are spelled incorrectly. I reported this to the GRO and they subsequently confirmed that the errors occurred when transcribing the registers, and that these have now been corrected. However it does mean that index copies already extracted by third parties such as Ancesty will contain the errors. |

I had my great great grandmother on one census in 1861 with husband and family in Barking, and then on another with her daughter in Surrey. Think she must have run away from the family, as on 1871 census she has a job as a cook in London, and husband still on Barking census. Then another great great grandfather aged 20 is shown on the 1841 census in Holborn with his parents and sister, and again living in Hackney with a wife and six week old son. Dont know if the family knew about the 'wife' and son, as I found he did not marry until 1843, and the son had died in 1842. Maureen |
