I find it so frustrating when I think I've found a rellie and then can't verify the details I think I've found! William Cross (aged 41 born Crendon Rackshold Harbour Bucks) is listed in the 1901 Census with a son called William Thomas age 11 (along with other siblings I wont both to list) and a wife called Annie (12 years his junior) also born Crendon etc. Trying to verify the information on the 1891 Census I can't find any of them. What am I doing wrong? And does anyone think a Night Watchman in 1901 could have become a Gunmaker by 1913 or am I stretching it a bit? Thanks Pat

Hi Reg Thanks so much for your diligent work. The problem I have is I do have the BC of WT Cross born Thane but his father then was an agricultural worker, then in 1901 the William I've found was a Night Watchman. The chap I'm looking for is a Gunmaker in 1913 (proven info). I cant get my head around this. I would have thought a Gunmaker was a trade possibly followed throughout working life. I'm probably just being too fussy - I just like everything to tie up and I can't get this to do that in my head. Something just doesn't seem right - if you know what I mean. So do I follow the 1901 and accept them into the family or continue searching for a William Cross Gunmaker in 1913 with a son called William Thomas born 1889 in the 11th Hussars. I'm about to give up I think. You have no idea the time I've spent trying to find WT's family. Many thanks Pat

Hello again Reg. The reason I kept looking was because the Thane BC of WT does not match the info re his birth on the 1901 census which says he was born in Crendon Rackbold like his father William? Confused or what!!! Signing off now so if I don't reply to anyone its because I'm not here, not ignoring you x

This one is in Buckinghamshire From Genuki site Long Crendon 'This parish covers 3348 acres, of which about 1413 are arable, 1587 permanent grass, and 2 woods. The soil is loam and clay on a subsoil of Kimmeridge Clay, Portland Beds, and Gault. The level of the land varies from rather over 200 ft. above the ordnance datum in the south by the thames to about 400 ft. in the north, near the Chilton boundary. In the 16th century Leland entered Long Crendon over Crendon Bridge of four stone arches and journeyed thence 'by some hilly and aftar great pasture ground and grounds fruitfull of benes.' The bridge or its successor, now bearing the name of Thame Bridge, still carries the road to Bicester across the Thame. Some distance north-east of the bridge it flows past the site of Nutley Abbey, a house of Austin Canons, the remains of which are now to a great extent absorbed in a substantial modern mansion, the property and residence of Mr. H. Reynolds.'

Long Crendon is on the outskirts of Thame which is on the Buckinghamshire/Oxfordshire borders.

Just a big big thank you to Reg, Yvonne and Pamela for the information posted yesterday. Now that I know Crendon Racksbold is more likely than not Long Crendon and that Long Crendon is only 3 miles from Thane (or Thame) then I can happily look at the BC I already have for WT Cross is more likely than not the person I've so long been looking for. If you see what I mean! At last I think I can move on - how exciting. Just need to rule out 2 more William(father) with a William T (son) and I'm away. Glad I joined this site - was beginning to wonder if it was a good idea or not but this information kindly given by you is certainly worth everything. Thanks again Pat
