I found tracking down other families in the area with the same surname useful for confirming or eliminating whether there was one or more persons of the same name. By collecting references for Abel families within a 20 mile radius, I was able to sort out that 2 of the 4 Edwards I'd found were actually the same ,so there were only 3 of them, not 4. By finding a will, I was able to confirm that what appeared to be two different families in 2 different places were actually the same family, who had moved - 3 children born in one parish and then 3 in another. The will was for a child of the first batch, who luckily left legacies to his brother and sister, one born in first parish and the other in the second parish. he named and gave addresses for them both. Drawing up mini trees also helps. It was only after about five years that I was able to link many of the small trees together, as one large extended family. Jay

I'm off to bed now, in case anyone replies. I'll be attempting to scale my brick wall again tomorrow.

Hi Jay, I got my information from the parish registers, not from IGI. How would the names of other Majors help? And how could I find them?

I would think it quite possible that there were two Williams. Have you had chance to look at the parish registers at all, or have you had to rely solely on IGI? Any more Majors around in nearby parishes? Jay

I can't find the birth/baptism and parents of WILLIAM MAJOR born c1731 [don't know where but he was a seaman so it could have been anywhere] He married Margaret Win(d)sor on 12th July 1763 in the parish of Ipplepen, Newton Abbot, Devon. They had 3 children baptised in Ipplepen: Mary, 9th sep. 1766; Elizabeth, 15th Jan. 1768 and Joan, 6th Feb. 1771. Margaret died in childbirth and was buried 1st Feb. 1771. It looks like William got married again: to Sarah A(u)ger on 30th March 1773 in Ipplepen, Newton Abbot. They had (at least) 4 children baptised in the parish of Wolborough, Newton Abbot: William, 1773; John, 1776; Nicholas, 1781 and Mary, 1786. A William Major was buried at Wolborough on 25th May 1813 aged 62. This would match up with the 2nd marriage but it would make him a bit young for the first one [12!]. Or could there have been 2 William Majors who were both sailors living in Newton Abbot? Can anyone help me out with this please? Where do I go from here?
