Genealogy Chat

Although I have good IT skills, the one thing I am having problems with is creating a good website of my family history. Using Legacy, it has its own web building engine, but it is transferring this to a website that I am having the most problem with. I signed up with Lycos, but found their service non-existant. Any help would be appreciated.

I have signed up with rootschat to make my own (see www*wulliam*rootschat*net if you're interested) and have also uploaded my gedcom to TribalPages so that I don't have to do anything too complex on my own site. Haven't spent a penny in doing either - that's got to be good! William

I've got one on Freewebs, doesnt cost me anything unless i want extra space/bandwidth ect or if i want to add it to search engines. Even if you do want to pay it doesnt cost much plus the prices have an advantage of being in $ which, when converted, come in at about half the price eg $20 is about £11/12. When editing the pages i can either do them in html or just type in what i want on a word like area. Its not complicated and the only thing i cant really change is the template but they have some nice ones so it not that much of a problem. To get round the space problem, which could be a problem with adding photo's, i have solved by putting my photo's on photobucket. Mhairi www.freewebs*com/mhairi_c

Depending on the package you have signed up to, a decent ftp programme will make uploading your site a doddle. If you want to go the whole hog then consider purchasing your own web address (a co(.)uk will cost less than £2 a year). You can then either rent hosting space or, if you have free webspace through your ISP, redirect to that space. The advantage to all this is that you do not have to rely on templates - you can literally design totally from scratch so that you have your own unique site with no restrictions.

Alun, You can get a free web site with a 50meg space allowance by joining RootsChat (free) and requesting a web page. I am up to about 26meg on mine so far with 6,000 individuals and about 150 pictures. If you want a bigger space they have a couple of paid options as well. My software also generates my web page, most should, and I upload it to my RootsChat web space using an FTP application. A good free one that I use is SmartFTP. You will find that Rootschat has an extensive help and assistance section. Paul

I would add rootschat has a very good support message board for its free web space. I did try but am not technical enough and use tribal pages which is very easy. If you have a family tree programme which can create a gedcom you can load it to tribal pages and then add notes and pictures as you want. Tribal page also offers a directory listing which means your names can be searched by other users. I found it particularly useful to let relatives in Australia see my tree for free.
