I’ve just received the 1852 birth certificate for one of my great-grandmothers. The registrar made a mistake when writing her mother’s name, putting her maiden name instead of married name, then he has put a line through it and written in the correct name. On the far right of the cert, outside the box, there is a word written, and the registrar’s initials underneath. I’m guessing that he is initialling his mistake and correction, but what would the word above his initials be? It definitely starts with an ‘E’ and the next letter looks like an ‘l’. Thanks, Mandy :)

Hi TW, This wasn't the register office that made the mistake (I know what you mean though), it was the registrar at the time of the birth registration in 1852. It's in the original handwriting and the initials match the registrar's. Mandy :)

Hiya Mandy, Would it be 'erratum' Latin for mistake? If you would like to scan it and send it to me, I can get my magnifying glass out, lol Sue

Hi Sue I don't think it's 'erratum' but I could be wrong (forgive the pun!). It actually looks quite like 'Eleanor' but that doesn't relate to anything at all on the cert lol! I'll just scan it and then email it to you. Many thanks for your help. Mandy :)

Thanks to Sue in 10b - the word is 'eleven' and I can now see that there's a number 11 written beside the correction. Mandy :)

It's what's referred to as a numbered error. The same number in figures should be next to the actual error itself. It has to be done before the entry is signed. This has recently changed for births and deaths and the registrar now just has to put initials next to the crossed through error like you would when you make a mistake filling out a cheque etc. It still remains the system for marriage certs.
