Thank you very much Anthena and Pam. I'm sure you are right and the Jean Smith I am looking for is the 38 year old. I'm going to follow that one in the hope it's right (I'm quietly confident it is). Forever grateful. Linda

Well done, Pam - yes, the Southwark entry would be the one Linda needs to order. Guy's Hospital is in Southwark and people who die in Southwark are normally buried in Camberwell Cemetery (there is also a Crematorium there, as per my info above). Hopefully with all this info - and if it is all followed through, Linda will soon have some success in finding where Jean was buried. Athena

Thought I would try and help as so many have helped me, dont know how good my info is but looked for deaths that may match and found these looking from 1958 to 1962 Smith Jean M age 32 reg district Bromley 2/4 1960 5b138 Jean age 38 reg district Southwark 3/4 1960 5d 445 Jean EE age 32 reg district Ealing 1/4 1961 5c 36 Hope this helps, I think Southwark is the registration district for Guys and its not far from her home its just the age is sightly different Good luck Pam

Linda - sorry, I've only just had a chance to log back on. Here is some info about Camberwell New Cemetery that might help you, which I found on the Southwark Council website after Googling for 'Camberwell New Cemetery Records'. From the website: 'The Cemeteries and Crematorium Service have records of burials going back to 1846 and cremations back to 1939. If you're searching for a record of someone who died in Southwark, we may well have a record of when and where they were either buried or cremated. Using our Search Service For a £10.00 fee we can search the records for you. Please write to us stating the full name of the person you're searching for and the month and year of death. If you don't have these details we will not be able to undertake the search. Remember to provide us with your name and address so we can contact you when we find the information. Searching the records yourself There is no charge for searching the records yourself and we'll be happy to point you in the right direction. All our burial and cremation records are held at our offices in Brenchley Gardens. You don't have to make an appointment but please note that the office is open at 9.00am and closes at 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. For further information please contact: [email protected] Tel: 020 7639 3121 Bereavement Service, Cemeteries & Crematorium Camberwell New Cemetery Brenchley Gardens London SE23 3RD --------- As you can see, they need a year and month of death in order to do a search on your behalf. The other way around it would be to search for Jean's death entry on the GRO death indexes. You can search these for free on Ancestry. Once you find the entry you can then order her death cert and this will then enable you to contact the cemetery with the relevant information, in order for them to find her burial record. They are very helpful in there and can find things very quickly once they have the right info. Best wishes - Athena

Thanks everyone for your input. I'm not very good with a computer and don't understand all the short forms given to me so it does make things harder. I've been trying this googling thing but don't really know what I'm doing. I have followed instructions you good people have given but still don't get results. Linda

Re electoral roll - I think they have now updated B4U website? If we are talking in the distant past, I have emailed the local records office and got a swift response.

Linda Would Guy's pass the info to her daughter if she had some proof of who she was? Looby

Linda - do you happen to live within easy reach of the Camberwell New Cemetery? If so, you can actually visit there and look through their records (very large, old books) to find the name of the person you are searching for. It helps that you have a rough idea of which year she died - so you could search 1960 first then a year either side etc until you find her. I found the burial of my grt grt grandfather this way - and I had no idea which year he died, just that it was during WW1 so I searched from 1914 onwards and found him in 1917. Not sure if the Camberwell cemetery do an actual look-up service - if you do a Google search for them and ring them up they might be able to help you. Hope that helps. Athena

Have you checked on Genes R. to see if her name appears in any trees? Regards Ann

Thanks Looby, I'll have to make the time. Can't get anything from Guy's Hospital because of the confidentialty laws. You can only have access to records with the permission of the person, if they are dead the permission of next of kin and since I don't know them it's a no go area. Linda

Cheers OC, I had a horrible thought it was going to be a long job. What's the saying 'Lord, help me to keep my big mouth shut' or 'Engage your brain before you open your mouth' Next time I'll remember those sayings before offering my help. Linda

Linda I think I'd try and find her death cert first - does anyone have any further information - I am also looking for a Jeanne Smith at the moment, but at least my 'Jeanne' is a bit more distinctive!!!!! Once you have the death cert the local cemetaries/crematoria/parks departments should be able to help you with a location. regards and goo dhunting Looby PS - not sure what they're privacy rules are, or how long they keep their records, but have you tried Guy's hospital to try and tie down the date of death?

Linda I don't think there IS a quick way of finding out this information. You will need to trawl the cemeteries/graveyards/crematoriums in the area where she lived/died and just work outwards in circles. Have you looked for a death notice in the local paper? Sometimes these give details of where the burial/cremation was to take place. That is the only shortcut I can think of, if family members don't know. OC

Can anyone help me find the following very quickly. I'm sure I would probably get there in the end but you lot all seem to find things so quickly I am hoping you can help this time. I am trying to find the full details of the burial/cremation of Jean Smith. She died aged 35yrs. around 1960. She died in Guys Hospital, London and her home address at that time was Camberwell, London SE5. I need this info. for her daughter who didn't know her mother and would like to visit her grave and perhaps be able to find out something about her. Separate from this is there anyone who has access to the electoral register and wouldn't mind doing a couple of look ups for me. Linda
