Hi there Is it usual for a whole family not to be on a census return ?! I've got Robert Beckford and his family on the 1881 census and then on the 1901 census but cannot find them anywhere in 1891 ??!! Any help would be great, Thanks, Marie xx

Hi Marie There are areas of the differenet census that are missing on Ancestry, maybe they are in one of them. Have you tried name variations in case of mistranscription? When were they born? Will take a look for you.

hi, i typed in beckford on lds site and it came back with a robert bickford - have you looked under that name variation? i was told you have to look for slight changes of spelling as not all people could read and write and some people have accents and the cumaloator getting the knowledge may have written it down as he heard it not how it was splet.

Yeah, I've tried a few different spellings, still can't find them !! but cheers for your help.

I think we have all had families that seem to disappear from one census or 'tother!! Sometimes you can be lucky and find them ..... other times I think they have gone on a trip on an alien spaceship!! Have you tried searching for one of the children using ONLY a christian name?? Enter year of birth + or - 5 years, county of birth, father's christian name and mother's christian name. I've had success using this ...... usually turns out that the surname has been so badly mangled that you never ever think of the variant!! Use place of birth only as a last resort as this can change from census to census. In one case of desperation ........ I even used only date of birth, county of birth, and parents names! Had to do a lot of scrolling down the listing ...... but I found the family!!!!

Here goes.... R Beckford. Head. Age 34. Married. Born London. Mary Beckford. Wife. Age 36. Married. Born Scotland. 6 kids are Ellen, Harriet, Alice, Margaret, Lily, and Janet. They are living in Kendall Street, Byker, Newcastle. I am trying to find Robert in 1891 aged approx 24. He was married in 1889 in Liverpool to Mary so I presume that they are living together somewhere and that Ellen and Harriet have been born. Just can't find them ! Cheers, Marie x

As Harriet was born in 1891, there is a fair chance they were living in Lancs in 1891. Just my 2c.... Paul
