I am OC. Not so sure about the others. Just never realised it was so expensive comparitively speaking to say Ancestry. It's all part of my in-depth research for the little project i'm working on. s well as a chance to have a little dig at GR on the side. LOL.

I have never used the site for actual images, fortunately all my badly mistranscribed rellies can be found by cunning methods on Ancestry, using first names only or wildcard searches, alphabetical listing of the districts etc or the time honoured trawl image by image through the parish. I'm looking at it from a beginners perspective, falling into the ppv system that some sites use would cost a fortune and in the early days not knowing how to use the different search options must cost an absolute fortune. It's pretty scary to think that some sites actually manage to charge the amounts they do when you consider others are free.

I also used the 1901 site before I got my subscription to Ancestry. It cost far too much but the transcriptions are *much* better than Ancestry's, so if you have someone you can't find on Ancestry, it may be worth buying a few credits on 1901 to check them out.

Hi If you mean the 1901 census National Archives site, be careful as I used it once about 4 years ago...............then....Last year (17th August to be precise - I still have the e-mail) I received a payment notification complete with a reference number etc. - It was not me - someone else had bought credits and the system had very kindly allocated them to me?. I e-mailed and rang them and spoke to a very nice lady who was supposed to be getting back to me when they found out what had caused the error - of course I am still waiting for that phone call. I think they hoped it would just all go away.....I was assured that MY details had not been compromised in any way but it did not alter the fact that someone else had brought credits which had then been allocated to me....so that situation could be reversed, if you see what I mean. Similar password? I don't know. I won't use the site now tho as it has made me very wary. Gail.

I agree. I spent hundreds of pounds on 1837online (now findmypast) looking up births. marriages and deaths before Ancestry got them on line. It certainly isn't a cheap pastime if you live in England!! I wouldn't be without my Ancestry sub. now. Kath. x

Add in the 1700 bmd refs i also have then i would be a poor man using the ppv system. On the flip side for £42 of SP credits i cracked three lines for my o/h back to the earliest dates the site covers including the main line certificates and a couple of wills. Kind of mad when you think how much the english stuff costs!!

Just had a play on the 1901 site, based on the cost of credits and results then the census images i have found since my ancestry sub last April i would have spent over £300 in credits!!
