Hi Does anyone know anything about London County Lunatic Ayslum in Ilford (might be Romford) or Camberwell House (which I assume was an asylum too).I've googled both and am going around in cicles! I'm particulary interested in Theodore John Besemer who was a patient at Camberwell House on the 1891 census and a pauper patient at the London County Asylum in 1901. Would it be possible to obtain his records? Thanks Lyndsey

The asylum you are referring to in Ilford is probably this one: Goodmayes Hospital, Barley Lane, Goodmayes, Ilford. Essex. lG3 8XJ (map) Many lunatic asylums are now hospitals and not called lunatic asylums nowadays. ;-) Suggest you search this website for info: http://www.mdx.ac.uk/WWW/STUDY/4_13_Ta.htm Yes, you can obtain the records if the staff at the facility can locate them. Cheers, Horatia

Thank you Horatia Apologies for my late thanks. I've been searching through the site but haven't been able to find any mention of Goodmayes Hospital or London County Lunatic Asylam. Is there anybody more familiar with it that can give me some tips? Many thanks Lyndsey

Use the site, then click on London and then do a Find Search by using Ctrl +F. However, your relatives records won't be on the website, you will have to write to them and make enquiries. Other than that, I suggest you contact the LMA (London Metropolitan Archives) and ask them. I found this by searching the catalogue of the LMA: Creator(s): Middlesex County Asylum at Hanwell, 1831-1889 London County Asylum, Hanwell, 1889-1918 London County Mental Hospital, Hanwell, 1918-1937 St Bernard's Hospital, Hanwell, 1937-1980 PATIENT RECORDS [Access Conditions] Patients' records are closed for 100 years. Cheers, Horatia

Camberwell House is mentioned on this website. Just do a Find search by using Ctrl +F key once the website has loaded. http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=45281 You will also find a lot of references to Camberwell House if you put this into Google exactly as I have done: 'Camberwell House' +lunatics Cheers, Horatia

Thanks Horatia. Now I understand what you were trying to tell me! There was so much text I couldn’t see the wood for the trees! That Ctrl+F facility is marvellous, I still don’t know an awful lot about computers but I’m learning all the time! I will certainly write to the hospital. Luckily (for me) Theodore was there in 1901 so over 100 years have elapsed . Just hoping now that the records have survived. Has anyone else successfully obtained records from Goodmayes Hospital? Lyndsey
