Glen In Tinsel Knickers Report 18 Feb 2007 11:03

It certainly sounds like a relationship mistake is causing problems. You will have to go through them and identify which ones are the culprits and rectify them. If you have a child showing as a cousin then it might be you have the child attached to the wrong parents in some way. Perhaps they were merged in error at some point (it happens sometimes when all the cousins, uncles and aunts have the same christian names !!) It is one of those cases where you know who should be where and that means you are the world authority on the family, it makes it difficult for an outsider to pinpoint exactly what to do but as a first step go through them one by one and correct any obvious errors you find. Hi Glenn, Thank you so much for all your help very kind. I think with your advice I have found the answer. I searched the kindship report and see that two children instead of being brother and sister are half cousins! Oh dear..... what a mess. Another problem with this family is that three generations called their children the same names, so I think this is there the problem coming from. All the children appear correctly in the tree however. I have printed off your messages in the hope I can correct the family relationships. Many many thanks you have been a great help. Elizabeth

I got this off the help centre, (the help section within FTM is not as comprehensive as the online help centre) =================================== Answer ID 1631 Question Do you have some tips for creating and understanding Genealogy Reports? Answer A Genealogy Report is a detailed listing of family information presented in a narrative format, just like a book. The report includes basic facts about each family member as well as any biographical information you entered in your Family File. Types of Genealogy Reports There are three variations of the Genealogy Report: Register (Descendant Ordered) The Register format is a descendant-ordered format; it presents information about your family starting with an ancestor and moving forward in time to that individual's descendants. The Register format is the format which is accepted by the New England Historic Genealogical Society, one of the oldest genealogical societies in the country. The Register format dates back to 1870 and is used to establish 'pedigree.' NGS Quarterly (Descendant Ordered) The NGS Quarterly format is also a descendant-ordered format; it presents information about your family starting with an ancestor and moving forward in time to that individual's descendants. The NGS Quarterly format is the preferred genealogical report of the National Genealogical Society. The format dates back to 1912. Ahnentafel (Ancestor Ordered) The Ahnentafel format is ancestor-ordered; it starts with one individual and moves backward in time to that individual's ancestors. It's not used as frequently as the other two formats for formal presentations of pedigree because it records two family lines in the same report. To select the type of Genealogy Report you'd like to display, first switch to the Genealogy Report view. Then from the Format menu, select Genealogy Report Format. Make your selection, and then click OK. Why are some of the children missing from the report? You may be wondering why some children are omitted from the Genealogy Report in Family Tree Maker or why data regarding children is printed inconsistently. This is a question we get asked frequently, and there is a logical explanation. A sample genealogy report based on the following fictitious family will help illustrate this. Let's use the following people as our sample data: Dad, Mom, Child1, Child2, Grandchild1 (where Grandchild1 is the child of Child1). Here is a typical genealogy report that Family Tree Maker would generate using the above data: Descendants of Dad Generation No. 1 1. DAD1 was born March 03, 1933. He married MOM May 05, 1950. Children of DAD and MOM are: 2. i. CHILD12, b. June 06, 1960. ii. CHILD2, b. July 07, 1967; m. SPOUSE OF CHILD2, May 05, 1985. Generation No. 2 2. CHILD12 (DAD1) was born June 06, 1960. She married SPOUSE OF CHILD1 December 31, 1975. Child of CHILD1 and SPOUSE CHILD1 is: i. GRANDCHILD13, b. August 08, 1980. Please note in the above example that Child2 does not appear in the second generation. This is not a mistake. For individuals without children, Family Tree Maker lists their associated data (in this example, the spouse's name and marriage date) in the previous generation underneath the entry for their parents). For individuals with children, the pertinent information will be listed in the subsequent generation (their own generation). The genealogy reports in Family Tree Maker are based on standardized reports that were created by various genealogical societies. This is the same format used by these genealogical societies, and we tried stay as close to these formats as possible. What seems like a mistake is really an inherent characteristic of the report ======================================= It doesn't really display well on here, if you visit the help centre (find it via the 'Help' tab and the 5th selection 'online help centre...') , scroll to the middle od the new page and hit FTM knowledge database link. Enter the answer id and see the answer in the proper context.

Elizabeth Presumably all 10 children belong to the one couple (they aren't half siblings in any way)?) If you select one of the children and create a kinship report do ALL siblings appear as brother/sister to the selected child? (just checking for relationship errors, you never know.......) Do they appear correctly in a tree (say a descendant tree for their parents). This again might show a relationship error somewhere. Another question, have you got lots of generations to show in the report, sometimes parts of a generation (or an entire generation) are omitted because the memory allocated isn't enough. This should only happen with lots of generations though and is a built in safegaurd within FTM. It is possible to change settings but should only be done if everything else fails as it is a change to the advanced settings. Glen

I have parents with 10 children. When I look at the Genealogy Report I sometimes have five children, sometimes seven, but never 10. I have taken off all my merges from Ancestry because I thought this was the problem. Did not solve the problem. I went to each child`s file and deleted all extra information. Did not solve the problem. If I go to Tree Chart all ten children with their families are listed. I just do not know where the problem lies. I have searched the help box, but did not find an answer to my question. Does anyone have an explanation as to why 10 children are not shown on the Genealogy Report. I was wanting to send a copy of this report to a far distant cousin. Any advice would be gratefully received. Elizabeth
