You might find him named on a baptism entry. Sometimes a child knows the father and names him on their own marriage certificate ( but sometimes a fictious name is given 'to save face') A payment order may have been granted through the courts. The child may be named in a Will .... but then you'd need to know the father's name to search the Will. We were lucky to find one that included a bequest to ...'My natural son, Thomas Davis' which cleared up a longstanding problem of not being able to find a birth for Thomas with his father's surname. Depends when it was...if the child was baptised, the Vicar might put the name of the reputed father, certainly in the early 1800s. The mother may have taken out a Maintenance or affiliation order against the father. This would be in the local Magistrates court, or sometimes the Petty Sessions. Does the child have a middle name that sounds like a surname? That is often the name of the father. OC |
