Just start with what you do know Andrew. Some of the following you will probably know. Your birth certificate will have your parents names on it. You then need your parents marriage certificate. This will tell you how old they are and their fathers names and occupations. Work backwards with birth and marriage certificates, until you get back to 1901 and then you can look for family members on the 1901 census (which is the latest one available to us at the moment). It gets easier after that as you can go back every 10 years on the census and often find siblings for your family members. Just keep asking questions if you get stuck - but be prepared to spend some money, as without buying at least some certificates, you won't be able to verify things. Kath. x

Hi Andrew. I started a few months back with just my parents. From their birth certs I was able to put in my grandparents. I had to send off to GRO for their birth certs and discovered my great grandparents names, address and occupation. From this info I was able to find them on the census for 1901.
