Can anybody tell me if it were possible in 1980 or 1990 England to Live as man and wife and register children?. For example Mrs Smith no longer lives with her husband he is still alive living elsewhere, she fall in love with mr Jones gets pregnant. Can she just move in with him and call herself mrs Jones then register any children as parents both Jones?. Would it all come out when she died or would it be enough if her children just registered the death as Jones. I wonder if you had to give proof then of marriage?. May be an odd question but would solve a puzzle. Jacky

Did you mean 1890? This was very very very common. Don't believe anything you've ever heard about the Victorians. There's never been any requirement to produce proof of identity when registering a death.

Yes, I'm sure it happens. We can't find a marriage for my husband's parents, although husband and brothers births are registered as if they were married. Husband's father was married previously and we don't think he divorced, so we think his parent's just lived as man and wife - although this would be completely out of character as they were a very straight laced couple. Absolutely yes to every question. They lived together, had kids - the woman would call herself Mrs Jones formerly xxxxxx - why would anyone question it? No need to provide proof for any event. If you cant find a marriage just before the kids, go for a couple of decades after - yep they do happen - possibly if an earlier spouse has died and the couple feel free to marry or when some sort of trauma occurs and they feel a prick of conscience or meet a persuasive vicar.

Yes, my husbands family (1800's)originated from a man + woman who were living together .The subsequent children were given his name............She was down as housekeeper on one census! (she was married to someone else) She claimed to be unmarried on another census.

My aunt died in 1993 using her partners name. She had told the family that she had had a quiet wedding. I have never found the marriage details. Pat
