Do you have any information about your parents/grandparents, date of birth, surnames, maiden names etc? |

Yes know mum and grandmothers names and d.o.b etc and got a good idea about dad but not much about grandfather. I've tried scotlandpeople and don't really know where to start on the site. |

Thanks for this info, been waiting for my mum to come back from holiday so I could get more info from her. Will be on with it in the morning as she arrived back tonight! Hope I find something, it seems really interesting. Have set my students a project on researching their family history and I'm stuck on the first hurdle. Hopefully this will get me sorted. Cheers again. |

Hi Mandy Welcome! First up, you'll need to get your parents birth and/or marriage certs - these will give you the details of their parents, enabling you to get the certs for the previous generation, and so on. For Scottish births after 1906 and marriages after 1931, you have to apply to the GRO Scotland for the certs - there is no online index. Visit their website for more info, application forms, etc: www.gro-scotland.gov.uk Once you get back beyond those dates, you can do most of your research online. For Scotland, you'll need to use ScotlandsPeople: www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk You'll need to register and buy some credits, and then you'll be able to search for bmd certs, censuses, old parish registers, etc. You can even download copies of the original documents for a small fee. But be warned - this hobby is VERY addictive (and can also be quite expensive)!!! Cheers, Richard |
