Unless you are pretty confident with using the search options then the census can be a bit funny to search for the first few attempts. Ancestry has the set from 1841-1901 and can be used with basic information, the main problem occurs when an ancestor is mistranscribed, that is when you need to know about wildcard searches and some other little tricks. It is best to ask for a lookup or two first and find out how your rellies are recorded in terms of place and year of birth etc. If possible you should always check the actual image, sometimes the image and the index don't always match, eg i have a chap indexed as Ellmer and recorded as Elmer on the image. Only by checking his occupation and address on the image could i say for certain he was mine (i had certs which tallied up with the census details). Just going on the index/result page i couldn't say he was definately mine.

www(.)ancestry(.)co(.)uk (remove brackets) has all of the census from 1841 - 1901 plus some scottish ones...it also has the complete BMD index for england and wales. There is quite alot of other excellent resources as well... For a years UK subscription its £69.99 (it might have gone up so check) you can view the 1881 census free at www.familysearch.org
