I seem to remember posting these details.......lol! Or there is another family with extremely similar info I checked the image at the time, and the birthplaces are very clear. The eldest was born in Rangoon, Burma. Obviously, either the man's employment took him abroad, or he had been a serving member of HM Forces and had been posted abroad. A lot of English people were involved in the construction and maintenance of the railways in places like India and Burma............. You should be able to find the births on the overseas section of findmypast........the certs will no doubt clarify the situation. Reg |

There are two children born Madras India and another born Rangoon Burma. Forces? Working abroad on major engineering projects? Have you located them in the 1881 census? Was he a soldier then? |

An Olde Crone | Report | 15 Feb 2007 11:53 |
I was startled to find in my own tree, a humble mill worker, with six children, four of whom had been born in Prussia. Further investigation showed that a team of workers from the mill had been sent to Prussia to oversee the setting up of a woollen mill in Prussia, and presumably training the local workforce in the use of the machinery. Remember that in Victorian times, England was the leading nation in the world for innovative engineering and technology, and I am sure that many British railway workers went all over the world, to 'show them how to do it'.
