What happens to the original Birth Registration of a child who is adopted? I have the child's birth name, date and place but cant find the Registration for it. Would I be right in thinking the child is re-registered in his own name? Thanks |

Hi Sue, When a child is first born it is registered under it's birth name, after the adoption process is completed, then there is a new entry is the adoption register under the new adopted name. Occasionally but not always if you look at the original entry (birth name) this is crossed through and a amendment number is next to it. Hope this is clear enough for you, but if you have any more questions feel free to e.mail me. Sheila |

If you go to your local Registry Office with the details of birth and birth name you should be able to obtain original certificate, if you know when ans where the child was adopted you can then obtain a certificate for that entry, you will find the staff very helpful,Good Luck |

Hi Patricia, The local offices will not always issue an original birth cert, mine was brilliant and issued mine and I found them very helpful, however, I advised several adoptee's if they live locally to do this as it is a lot quicker, and quite a few have been told they have to contact GRO in Southport to obtain one :O( might be easier to phone them first and ask will they do it. I know this sounds a bit obvious, but have you looked at the end of the index listing for that surname for any male/females? Child may have been registered befroe name decided. Dawn |
