Deed Poll

Short and sweet - is there any way of finding out whether some one did, indeed change their name by deed poll? are any central records kept? I have a 'step-grandmother' who is being particularly obstructive about revealing anything about her past. Her daughter suspects the mother changed her (the mothers) name by deed poll. Can i confirm or deny this?

Hi Sharon Have a look at the National Archives http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/Leaflets/ri2250.htm There is quite a bit of info regarding change of name by deed poll /records etc. I am off to bed in a minute!! (old age is a terrible affliction! lol) so didn't have time to read it all. Hope it helps Regards Ann

Contrary to popular belief, there is no central register of name changes in the United Kingdom. Deed Polls are not registered anywhere unless they are 'enrolled' i.e. lodged for safe keeping, in the Close Rolls of the Chancery (from 1851 to 1902) and from 1903, in the Enrolment Books of the Supreme Court of Judicature, which is located within the Royal Courts of Justice in the Strand, London. In fact there is not even any need to have a Deed Poll at all, to change ones name, but today you might have a few problems if for example you were trying to obtain a passport.
