There is a place called Hull Bank in Cumbria. (would have been Cumberland then probably) It's between Appleby and Kirkby Stephen. Kath. x

Hi Sarah, I am guessing that it would be a road literally on the bank of the River Hull, as in Kingston-upon-Hull. Does that sound likely? There are a few references to Hull Bank if you Google for it. :-) Chris

Hmm, maybe Cumberland is a more likely place than Hull for a shepherd, thinking about it, but I really don't know what Hull was like so long ago. I can't imagine sheep there now though. :-) Chris

Dunswell is still quite rural, and quite alot of the surrounding areas were. It was nowhere near like it is now. I've just been transcribing some 1871 census for parts of Hull and surrounding villages that I know well, and even what I would call parts of the city center these days were fairly rural then. Must say I'd never heard of the one in Cumberland! lol Jeanette.....a couple of miles from Kingston upon Hull

OH has just come in and reminded me that there is an area in Hull referred to as Bank Side. It is in the area of Clough Road to Sculcoates Lane and is so called because it runs along side the River Hull Jeanette x
