Hi All, Many thanks for all your replies. Food for thought. I think I need to establish as suggested what sort of engraver he was. Knowing the dates he lived in Soho may help me to pin this down. Bye Paul |

I don't think there was one Guild for all engravers. The term engraving can mean on wood, metal or glass or it can be the process of creating woodblock printing plates for illustrations in books. The skills and tools are different for each and, without knowing which your ancestor did, it might be difficult tracing any professional body they might have belonged to. Possibly a local directory of craftsmen would mention them. I have ancestors who belonged to a woodcarving family and I've seen adverts for them in Victorian directories which are now in our local records office. Nowadays there are metal and wood engravers who belong to the Guild of Master Craftsmen (I don't know when they were formed) and there are glass engravers who belong to the Guild of Glass Engravers. I know that was formed in the 1970s because I am a member of that one. Good luck Sue |

Hi, Can anyone tell me if there was a 'Guild of Engravers'. If so would you know where I need to look. I have a relative who was an engraver in Soho, London between 1800 - 1830. This may be a way of finding out more about him and his parents. Bye Paul |
