Parish records go back to about mid 16th century. I am in the same situation as you with my GGPx4 - whose headstones I can stand in front of - but cannot find them baptised or marrying. I know from the headstones that my GGFx4 was born 1735 and his wife 1741 and they have an unusual local name but nope, cant find them. The earliest info I have is a settlement certificate in 1760 when they moved from one parish to another and appear to have only recently married as they had a dozen kids but this cert mentions 'and any child or children that they may have' - as certs seem to normally name the kids, I am thinking 1760 for the marriage - but do you think I can find it???? |

hi danualla(hope thats spelt right)....unfortunately,alot depends on the county you are looking in........i`m lucky.....this site for cheshire, goes back to 1500`s....just have a look through it,so that,if you do touch lucky, you will get to know the procedure,,, www.csc.liv.ac.uk/~cprdb go to database go to babtisms or marriages or burials then all parishes then type in surname then click submit........its a little complicated at first, but you`ll get the hang of it......when the name comes up....if you write down the number......then put a 1 in front...you`ll get ie (1)8010711 this gives you 1801 (year of birth) 07 day 11 month so this person was born 7th july 1801......as i say ..a bit complicated, but worth persevering with.....if you are looking for someone in cheshire,by any chance, send me their name, and i`ll see if they`re on this parish register site........good luck....allan |

Danualla It would be quite a safe bet at that time that they were also born in the parrish they married in as people didn't stray too far (although some did) Maybe parish records don't exist further back than 1700. Don't forget official records didn't begin till 1837 - before then it was the church who kept records - that's if they have survived. Last hope would be to get to the Records Office and see what they have on film....or post a thread to see if someone can look on your behalf Elly |

Hi i have got back on most of my branches of my tree 1700-1800,now i have tried the parishes where my ancestors married, had children and died and lived etc and cant find their baptisms 9 (ie where they actually come from),i know most of their ages from death records but where do i go from here when i dont even know where they were born or is it just a case of going parish to parish looking for them? Also another confusing thing is that where they married it says they were of this parish=they lived there at the time of marriage,so how do i know where they come from?? xx |
