Wonder if anyone can help: tracing the family of a man listed as born in the West Indies (no place given) in 1830 - suspect more like 1827 - and given in all census where he appears as a British Subject. But....his father is an 'officer in the Spanish Army' on the marriage certificate. Was his mum British? would that have made him a British Subject? Or would being born on a British island (lots of them in 1830) have made him a British subject? Although can't imagine what the Spanish Army was doing on a British island..... Any thoughts? Might help me narrow down his place of birth. |
