I think what Reg was referring to was her place of birth - you said it said she was born in Shoreditch and English birth certs dont show a mothers place of birth. Residence would just be where she was living at the time of the birth. |

Hi Reggie some thing happend to computer but it ok now on my grandads birth cert dated 1903 section 7 that says signature description and residence of informant I have a written cross then words saying this is the mark of Sarah Chapman mother |

I'm curious to know where on an English birth cert the mother's birth details are recorded........or is it, in this case, something added by relatives at some later date. Reg |

Hi no he was born in London I think it would be easier to get grandads parents wedding cert as I have just done another search and put in another year and only one Sarah came up but she born in Liverpool my Sarah on grandads birth cert says she born in Shoreditch I know she could not read or write as on birth cert there is a cross where she should of signed thanks |

Registration wasn't compulsory until 1875. You say you've looked only on freebmd............perhaps the record is on the full index. Register with Ancestry to gain access to the index. Reg |

Hi I am looking for Sarah Berwicks birth cert my grandads mother, info on grandads birth cert tells me she was born in Shoreditch in 1872/73 I have traced Sarahs wedding cert on free bmd but I could only do this through her husbands name she does not appear to be on there for some reason any one got any ideas to why? Thanxs Julie |
