Occupation of a single Mother in 1910. Am I right in thinking that 'a Hawker' was a door to door sales person? ...or what? Gerri. |

Hi Gerri, Hawker / Huckster Peddler or street seller. Itinerant street dealer who carried his wares with him. Often used as a term of abuse. From this site:- http://rmhh*co.uk/occup/ |

My 'Hawker' was a respectable market gardener who built his own house (still standing - so not a corrugated iron & sod affair) and then went on to own a shop!!! So I think it can also apply to people who sell things other than in a shop, like for example a travelling grocer/butcher. maggie |
