Thank you all for your help. I'm afraid my Great grandmother was very elusive, she told us nothing about herself! All i know is she was married twice and moved from Durham to New York where she worked for a while....Hey, just realised she could of married a Yank first time round! Any one got access to the US Ancestry, Please!!!!! She moved to Liverpool after that but can only go on the fact that my grandmother was born in Liverpool. Anyway my grand mother was born in 1918, that's why i thought Ethel and James were married about 1917. Well, it was worth a try and i thank you all again. Regards Debbie |

Debbie I have searched all quarters of the marriage indexes from 1910-1920 & there are plenty of Ethel & Ethel M Pattison marriages but none to the men you mentioned. Maybe as you say she met a Yank during WW1 & went back with him to marry in the USA. There is 1 quarter missing on Ancestry & that is the June quarter 1912 maybe you could check marriages for that quarter on findmypast. Georgina. |

Debbie Some registrations didn't make it to the GRO so you may have better luck at the local RO to where the marriage took place. One word of warning....If the marriage took place in London many of the ROs won't issue certificates for Family History purposes :( I have a birth in 1921 that falls into this category :( Chris |

Debbie I have checked 1917-1920 & there are plenty of Ethel Fishers but none married a Mr Bishop. What makes you so sure she married in 1917? Georgina. |

Thanks for your quick reply Heather. I didn't realise that there were two indexes. I'll try again now and use the complete index if i didn't use that one before. cheers. Debbie |

When you say the index - are you using the COMPLETE index or just the partial bmd index? In the former you cant just search by name for a result, you have to go through each quarter looking for the person. |
