Thanks for all your ideas, I think I will buy one of her childrens birth certs, she had 9 altogether. Not sure what year she was married but her oldest child was born in 1830. Thanks again.

If you live near the records office for Essex you could search the church records for free if it's a Cof E church or find out where to write if she was a R C. i'd google Essex records office, you can normally check what records they hold online margaret xx

How did you get back to her? Normally working backwards you would find her children and order one of their birth certs if they are born after 1837 and registered to get her maiden name. You wont get a birth cert for her because they didnt come about until 1837. To go through births, marriages and deaths you can use freebmd - but its not complete or go to ancestry and look through the index quarter by quarter for the registration. You then can buy the certificate from GRO online for £7 to get further info. Before 1837 you can try the IGI familysearch.org parish records but the best bet would be to look for the kiddies birth cert and buy that. When did she marry - when was first child born?

I have my GGG grandmothers married name of Rachel Dodd born in 1809 in Purleigh Essex. Is there any way I can find her maiden name? I did think if I searched the births in that area for that year I might find something but can this be done. Would be grateful for any ideas.
